This thesis presents the design of a new primary and lower–secondary school in Prague’s Holešovice district, developed in response to a competition brief addressing the current shortage of school capacity in the capital city. Prague plans to construct approximately fourteen new schools. The proposed building is designed for 540 pupils and 60 teachers. The school, Jan Vodňanský, is named after a prominent local figure – a long-time resident of Prague 7, known as a singer, writer, and actor. The brief calls for a clear vision of a 21st century school that addresses contemporary ecological, social, and aesthetic demands. The school is conceived as an urban block with the potential to shape the character of the surrounding area. It is located in a former working-class district near the port, and the design includes the redevelopment of outdoor spaces and the restoration of Přádelní alley for pedestrians and cyclists. The project builds on pre–thesis studio research exploring approaches and theoretical frameworks for a 21st century school. Key considerations include supporting diverse learning methods, leisure, creativity, and the physical and mental wellbeing of pupils. Inspiration was drawn from Maria Montessori, Herman Hertzberger, and Rosan Bosch, whose approaches emphasise openness, flexibility, active learning, and choice. The envisioned school aims to be open, inclusive, motivating, and safe, fostering a strong school community and high–quality teaching, and serving as a second home while preparing pupils for a rapidly changing world.
