This master's thesis discusses using variable MEMS aperture in electron microscopes, its design, and fabrication. The final aperture is essential for defining the aperture angle, which affects the microscope's resolution and speed of analytical work. The variable aperture should help achieve almost any aperture angle and beam current on a sample within expected bounds. The thesis consists of an introduction to micromechanical devices, electron microscopy, and a review of micromanufacturing techniques, including lithography and etching. Design and simulations of variable MEMS aperture were carried out. Then the moving device actuated by electrostatic forces was manufactured using lithographic processes and a focused ion beam. Testing of the device confirmed that its properties and movement were according to the simulations and the calculations.
