Course detail

Theory of Architecture 2

FA-TA2-TAcad. year: 2027/2028

The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic overview of the historical development of architectural theory through selected key moments. It seeks to show that many of the themes addressed by architecture as a discipline today have their roots in the past, while the historical context influenced how these themes were understood. Understanding these connections helps students develop a clearer awareness of architecture’s position in relation to other disciplines, its role in society, and the questions it raises both about its relationship to society and about itself as an autonomous discipline. The course follows on from Theory of Architecture 1: Introduction and prepares students for Theory of Architecture 3.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Assessment is based on the award of course credit. Students are required to attend at least 80% of the seminars, complete the ongoing assignments individually, submit a group project as part of the semester assignment, and present it in class.

Students are expected to participate actively in the classes. Preparation involves reading the assigned texts and completing the ongoing assignments. Any missed work has to be made up through self-study.

In the case of an excused absence, missed classes may be made up individually in consultation with the course coordinator.

Aims

Beyond the specific knowledge students will gain through lectures and work on assigned tasks, the course aims to strengthen their understanding of architecture as a complex discipline with its own body of knowledge and methods. It also seeks to clarify how architecture differs from other fields, especially those that address similar themes, and where its value lies. The teaching places emphasis on the process of thinking and on asking questions before arriving at conclusions or adopting particular positions. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain how architecture is defined as a discipline and what its body of knowledge is based on;
  • arrange the key milestones in the development of architectural thinking in chronological order;
  • place key ideas within their historical context;
  • identify enduring themes in the history of architecture and explain them in their own words;
  • identify the theoretical influences informing their designs.
