This course focuses on hands-on instruction focused on alternative glassmaking techniques, drawing on the basic physical, chemical, and optical properties of glass and providing an overview of its main types. Students will become familiar with basic glassworking methods and selected technologies for the production of sheet and float glass, including their historical development. The course includes hands-on work with stained-glass techniques, glass worked over a torch, and glass annealing processes in a kiln, supplemented by experimental and DIY approaches and options for glass recycling. The course also includes a field trip to a selected manufacturing or technological facility, which will allow students to place the knowledge they have gained in the broader context of contemporary glass production.

Credit will be awarded for active participation in seminars (up to 3 unexcused absences are permitted) and for completing a project or applying one of the technologies introduced during the semester in a student’s own work.
Aims
The course aims to provide students with a technical overview and practical experience in glass production and processing, with a special emphasis on DIY glassworking techniques. The course addresses the energy intensity of glass production and focuses on creative experimentation with alternative and small-batch techniques that enable independent work with glass outside of industrial settings. The goal is to develop students’ ability to understand the basic properties of glass, selected technological processes, and their practical application in contemporary experimental and original artistic creation.
Students will be able to select appropriate materials and technological processes in accordance with their own artistic intent, carry out simpler glass experiments, and take into account the material and energy requirements of their chosen approach. They will be able to further develop the knowledge and skills acquired at the intermediate level independently and apply them in their own experimental and original work.
