Course detail

Therapeutic Technology

FEKT-MPCN-TERAcad. year: 2026/2027

The course focuses on the physical principles, technical systems, and therapeutic applications of ultrasound, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, laser light, accelerated electrons, and protons. Covered topics include ultrasound therapy and surgery, radiofrequency ablation, hyperthermia, particle-based radiotherapy, stone fragmentation (ESWL, PEK), and electrophysiological mapping. The course also addresses the use of lasers in medicine, cardiopulmonary and renal extracorporeal circulation, interventional cardiology systems, ventilation and anesthesiology devices, defibrillators, organ replacements and prostheses, surgical robots, and technologies used in biochemical and immunological laboratories.

Teacher / Lecturer

Syllabus

  1. Replacement and support of sensory functions
  2. Orthoses and prostheses
  3. Medical technology in surgery
  4. Robot-assisted therapy
  5. Endoscopic systems
  6. Cardiac support
  7. Electrophysiological mapping and interventional cardiology
  8. Biochemical analyzers
  9. Respiratory support
  10. Use of radiofrequency and microwave radiation in therapy
  11. Lasers
  12. Ionizing radiation
  13. Holter and functional testing

Field trip

20 hours, optionally

Teacher / Lecturer

Syllabus

During the semester, half-day excursions are organized to selected facilities and medical technology manufacturers. The purpose of these excursions is to familiarize students with practical operations, technical systems, and approaches used in diagnostics and therapy. Participation in the excursions is voluntary but recommended to complement the theoretical knowledge gained during lectures.

Individual preparation for a lecture

13 hours, optionally

Teacher / Lecturer

Syllabus

Students have access to study materials for each lecture, including presentations, concise summaries, and supplementary information available on the e-learning platform. Each student is expected to review these materials independently before the lecture in order to actively participate in discussions, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of the topics covered.

Individual preparation for a final exam

13 hours, optionally

Teacher / Lecturer

Syllabus

During their preparation, students review the main principles, methods, and technical aspects covered in the course. They work through the provided list of exam questions and reinforce their understanding of practical procedures, ensuring they are well-prepared to apply their knowledge during the final oral examination.
