Enhanced English Skills

The course is designed to develop students’ English for Specific Purposes (ESP) while further consolidating their general English language proficiency. It focuses on communication skills required in academic and professional contexts, particularly in an international workplace environment.

Students consolidate and extend intermediate-level (B2 CEFR) grammar and general vocabulary relevant to professional communication while developing specialised vocabulary and language skills through academic and discipline-related topics. Particular emphasis is placed on critical thinking, listening comprehension, academic discussion, and oral presentation skills.

Course Content

Introduction: Course Orientation

  • Introduction to study materials, course requirements, assessment criteria, and effective foreign language learning strategies.
  • Academic study at BUT: communication, resources, and learning expectations.

Topic 1: Education and Entrepreneurship – The Road to Success

  • Listening focus: identifying contrasting ideas and viewpoints.
  • Critical thinking: evaluating and ranking options.
  • Language focus: compound and complex sentences.

Topic 2: Science – Laws of Science

  • Listening focus: making inferences from spoken information.
  • Vocabulary development: word formation and word families.
  • Critical thinking: distinguishing between similar concepts and terms.
  • Language focus: present perfect and present perfect continuous.

Topic 3: Anthropology – Accidental Inventions and Discoveries

  • Listening focus: identifying signal words and phrases.
  • Vocabulary development: collocations with prepositions.
  • Language focus: reported speech.

Topic 4: Engineering – The Consequences of Technological Progress

  • Listening focus: identifying causes and effects.
  • Critical thinking: making evaluations and assessments.
  • Vocabulary development: idiomatic expressions.
  • Language focus: conditional structures.

Topic 5: Evaluation and Assessment

  • Review of course content.
  • Assessment of acquired language skills and competencies.

Entry knowledge

The course is designed for students with an intermediate level of English proficiency. It assumes that students possess language knowledge and skills corresponding to B1/B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and have successfully completed the prerequisite course English Skills

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

To successfully complete the course, students are required to actively participate in seminars, complete assigned individual preparation and online quizzes, deliver a face-to-face oral presentation, and successfully pass the final written examination and oral assessment.

The final written examination evaluates students’ knowledge and skills in the areas covered during the course. A minimum score of 60% is required to pass the written test. The oral assessment is also a compulsory part of the final evaluation. Students who do not achieve the required result are allowed to retake the assessment.

Successful completion of quizzes and the oral presentation requires a minimum achievement of 60%.

Attendance at seminars is compulsory and is regularly monitored by the teacher. Students may be absent from a maximum of two seminars without additional requirements. In justified cases, if the number of absences exceeds this limit, the teacher may set additional requirements or make-up activities to ensure that the course requirements are fulfilled.

 

Aims

The course builds upon the English language skills students have acquired in secondary school and developed further in the BUT course English Skills. It extends students’ language proficiency in the context of academic and professional communication, with an emphasis on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) relevant to an international workplace environment.

The course focuses on practical communication skills required in professional and academic contexts. Students consolidate and further develop intermediate-level (B2 CEFR) grammar and general vocabulary related to the workplace while expanding their specialised vocabulary and communication skills through academic topics. Particular emphasis is placed on oral communication, including discussions, professional interaction, and oral presentations.
