Course detail

Optical Networks

FEKT-BPC-OSIAcad. year: 2026/2027

The course focuses on the physical layer of telecommunication networks and introduces the main types of transmission media used for signal transmission. It covers both wired and wireless transmission principles, with particular emphasis on cable-based media.

The main topics include coaxial cables, twisted-pair cables, optical fibers, and basic cable installation and termination procedures. Attention is also given to the transmission and propagation of electromagnetic waves in different transmission media, basic multiplexing techniques, and methods for measuring and evaluating transmission parameters. The course further includes practical examples of telecommunication networks implemented using different types of transmission media.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

A maximum of 40 points can be obtained from coursework during the semester:

  • 20 points for a test covering theoretical and practical knowledge from the exercises,
  • 20 points for successful completion of the laboratory exercises .

The required scope and form of the individual project are specified in regulations issued by the course lecturer and updated for each academic year.

The final written examination is evaluated with a maximum of 60 points.

The detailed content, organization, and forms of instruction are defined in regulations issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated annually.

Attendance at laboratory exercises is compulsory. Any missed laboratory session must be made up by prior arrangement with the instructor.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with transmission media used in telecommunication networks, with particular emphasis on cable-based transmission systems. The course combines theoretical principles with practical aspects of metallic and optical transmission media.

Students gain knowledge of the properties, parameters, installation, interconnection, measurement, documentation, and fault localization of different types of transmission media. The main focus is on twisted-pair cables, coaxial cables, and optical fibers.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify and describe the main types of transmission media used in telecommunication networks,

  • explain the basic transmission properties and parameters of metallic and optical transmission lines,

  • compare twisted-pair, coaxial, and optical fiber transmission media,

  • select a suitable transmission medium for a given telecommunication application,

  • design a basic transmission link and its topology,

  • select appropriate technologies for joining and terminating metallic cables,

  • select appropriate technologies for splicing and terminating optical cables,

  • perform basic measurements on metallic and optical transmission lines,

  • evaluate basic measured parameters of transmission media,

  • identify and localize typical faults in metallic and optical cables,

  • understand the basic principles of cable installation, cabling systems, route documentation, and cable infrastructure management.
