The course focuses on the physical layer of telecommunication networks and introduces the main types of transmission media used for signal transmission. It covers both wired and wireless transmission principles, with particular emphasis on cable-based media.
The main topics include coaxial cables, twisted-pair cables, optical fibers, and basic cable installation and termination procedures. Attention is also given to the transmission and propagation of electromagnetic waves in different transmission media, basic multiplexing techniques, and methods for measuring and evaluating transmission parameters. The course further includes practical examples of telecommunication networks implemented using different types of transmission media.

Requirements for successful completion of the course
A maximum of 40 points can be obtained from coursework during the semester:
- 20 points for a test covering theoretical and practical knowledge from the exercises,
- 20 points for successful completion of the laboratory exercises .
The required scope and form of the individual project are specified in regulations issued by the course lecturer and updated for each academic year.
The final written examination is evaluated with a maximum of 60 points.

Attendance at laboratory exercises is compulsory. Any missed laboratory session must be made up by prior arrangement with the instructor.
