Basics of Motion Design

The course consists of six three-hour blocks. Each block focuses on mastering a selected aspect of working with vector and raster graphics in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, such as drawing curves, editing photographs and scans, or preparing textures. Emphasis is placed on subsequently using the resulting materials in Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Course credit is awarded on the basis of attendance or a discussion of the development of an individual project in motion design and visual post-production.

Teaching takes place in an FFA BUT classroom at the times specified in the timetable. Attendance at lectures and practical sessions is not compulsory if students make individual arrangements to complete their own project during the course.

Aims

The course aims to help students master the technical tools and creative methods of working with moving images that will enable them to express their ideas and intentions as directly as possible.

Students will learn to use current software and become familiar with contemporary methods for processing motion graphics (both vector- and raster-based) and video.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to motion design. The possibilities of using raster and vector graphics in After Effects. Creating compositions from Illustrator / Photoshop files. Principles of creating and controlling motion. Output formats and rendering. 2. Composition in a three-dimensional scene. Setting materials and textures. Lighting. Basic camera work. Visual effects. 3. Curve animation. Trimming paths. Animated typefaces. Basics of using expressions in motion control. 4. Animated puppet. Designing a puppet in Illustrator/Photoshop and importing layers into After Effects. Setting and connecting joints. Puppet Pin tool. 5. Basics of video post-production. Video editing. Keying. Masks in the moving image. Motion tracking. Rotoscopic brush. Colour correction. After Effects / Premiere mutual co-operation. 6. Design and implementation of custom composition: combining motion graphics, texts and video.
