Course detail
FSI-IKTAcad. year: 2026/2027
The subject contains two parts. The first part will introduce the basic types of heat exchangers (recuperative, regenerative, mixing). Students will acquire the basic principles of design and selection of heat exchangers. In the second part, students will be acquainted with the operational characteristics of steam and hot water boilers. The properties of fuels and their impacts on the design and operation of combustion plants in energy centers are presented. Furthermore, the statics of combustion, heat balance of boilers and individual types of furnace fires according to the fuel used.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes: Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of obtaining 12 points from the written test (maximum 20 points). Examination: written exam and oral correction. The written part consists of points, for successful completion it is necessary to achieve at least 50% of achievable points.Controlled participation in lessons: Exercises are compulsory. The student will be compensated for absence by agreement with the tutor. Lectures are optional.
Aims
The aim is to acquaint students with the current state and theoretical designs of boilers and heat exchangers and with modern trends in the development of these devices. Upon completion of this course, the student should be aware of the types and properties of fuels and their impact on the design of the boiler and will be able to basic thermal calculation necessary to design a boiler or heat exchanger.Students will be able to apply theoretical knowledge especially from thermomechanics, hydromechanics and heat and mass transfer in the design of combustion equipment and heat exchanger.
