Methodology of Scientific Work

The course is designed as a practical introduction to the basics of writing technical and scientific texts. It includes an overview of research methods and funding sources for research in the Czech Republic and the EU. It also covers the possibilities and key principles of commercializing scientific outputs.

The general knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Students work on individual projects focused on searching scientific databases on the Internet. The projects are evaluated and discussed with the students. Submission and presentation of the projects are mandatory.

 

Aims

The course aims to introduce students to writing technical and scientific texts, understanding basic terminology in science and research, and exploring ways to fund research in the Czech Republic and the EU. Students will learn to evaluate scientific work, search for information in databases like Web of Science and Scopus, and analyze scientific articles. They will apply these skills when writing their own publications or technical reports and gain knowledge about the commercialization of scientific results.

Syllabus

Proposal of a topic for a future thesis and preparation of a literature review using relevant professional sources, including an abstract, introduction, selected chapters and a list of references. Both the content and the formal aspect of the submitted thesis, the originality of the chosen topic, the correctness and feasibility of the research questions are evaluated.
