Course detail

Physical Acoustics

FEKT-MPC-FYAAcad. year: 2024/2025

The course is devoted to parts of physical acoustics. A summary of the mathematical apparatus needed to study this area is provided here. Subsequently, knowledge related to sound waves, which students became familiar with in the mandatory courses Physics 1 and Physics 2 during their bachelor's studies, is expanded. Everything is subsequently applied to the issue of constructing and solving the wave equation for sound waves in different types of environments, and the properties of these waves are investigated. Students are also introduced to basic concepts and laws in the field of ultrasound, ultrasound defectoscopy and acoustic emissions.

Mode of study

Not applicable.

Entry knowledge

The student who enrolls in the course should have knowledge at the level of the courses Physics 1 and Physics 2.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Study evaluation is based on marks obtained for specified items.
Max. final classification is 100 points.
Student can obtain up to:
- 20 points from computer exercises,
- 20 points from the project,
- 60 points from the exam (a written part of 40 points and a verbal part of 20 points).
Students must obtain at least 15 points in the written part to proceed to the verbal part.
Students must obtain at least 5 points in the verbal part to pass the exam.

Computer and numerical exercises are not compulsory.
The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with a clear and logical interpretation of basic physical concepts and laws with a focus on the field of physical acoustics. It is primarily a description of physical fields, waves, fluid mechanics, acoustics and ultrasound. UUnderstanding of these concepts and laws will be strengthened through a wide range of interesting applications. Verification of the ability to apply the acquired knowledge will take place as part of the development of the project.
