Electromagnetic Compatibility

FEKT-MPA-VECAcad. year: 2023/2024

The course is focused on the following areas of electromagnetic compatibility: Basic concepts of electromagnetic compatibility. Interference sources, receivers and transmission paths. Level reduction and reduction of interfering signals. Technical means to improve the resistance of electronic devices to natural and artificial interfering signals, electrostatic discharges and industrial interference. Experimental verification and testing of electromagnetic compatibility, national and international standards, technical means, homologation criteria, different requirements for the automotive industry. Specifics of electric vehicle design. Laboratory measurement of electromagnetic interference and immunity testing of electrical devices. Teaching is complemented by an excursion in a professional EMC testing laboratory.

Entry knowledge

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor’s degree in the technical field is requested.

Work in the laboratory is conditioned by a valid qualification of "instructed worker" according to announcement 50/1978 Coll., which students must obtain before the start of teaching. Information on this qualification is given in the Dean's Directive regarding Familiarization of students with safety regulations.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The subject Electromagnetic compatibility is evaluated in the following way: In order to obtain credit, it is necessary to measure 5 laboratory tasks out of 6 possible ones. Laboratory teaching is evaluated during the semester and a maximum of 12 points can be obtained for it. During the semester, one optional written test with a score of 18 points is given. The final exam consists of two parts (written and oral) and is evaluated for a total of 70 points. To successfully pass the exam, a minimum score of 35 points out of a possible 70 must be achieved.
Evaluation of activities is specified by a regulation, which is issued by the lecturer responsible for the course annually.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic concepts and tasks of electromagnetic compatibility EMC with regard to the development, production and testing of electric vehicles. The individual sources of interference, receivers and methods of transmitting interfering signals are presented here. Furthermore, the course focuses on: reducing the level and reducing interfering signals; technical means to improve the immunity of electronic equipment to natural and artificial interfering signals, electrostatic discharges and industrial interference; EMC measurement; experimental verification of electromagnetic compatibility of technical equipment, national and international standards, homologation criteria of electric vehicles and their technical solutions. The laboratory exercises of the subject are then, focused on laboratory measurement of electromagnetic interference and testing of the electromagnetic immunity of electrical devices and components.
The graduate is able (1) understand basic the fundamentals of EMC, basic concepts and problems of EMC. He or she is able to identify (2) EMI signal sources of disturbing signals, coupling mechanisms of EMI signals, arts of coupling, radiated emission. He or she is able to design (3) filtering, isolation and suppression of Emi signals. The graduate is able to use (4) techniques for EMI reduction, EMC filtering, EM shielding, shielding effectiveness, magnetic shielding and cable shield. The graduate is able to (5) provide EMI measurements, EMS testing and used methods and instruments according to EMC standards and regulations, international, national and military standards.
