The Map and the Territory

The course takes as a starting point the assumption of media ecology, according to which we are all permanent spectators and performers today. As the interpretation of the relationship between the map and the territory has changed in history, it will be shown that the traditional relationship to reality as something that can only be known and represented is no longer sustainable, and that the task and opportunity of the 21st century is to create in the broadest sense of the word.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completion of the course should help students to orient themselves in the multilayered environment of contemporary global art theory and practice permeated by references to the sphere of media studies. The course will strengthen their ability participate in the interdisciplinary thought, reflect on academic texts and broaden the horizon for inspiration in their own work.

Prerequisites

Previous experience with a field of Media studies is not necessary.

Theoretical lectures, analysis of texts and works, discussions and practical demonstrations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The following conditions are set for the award of credit: active participation in class (2 permitted unexcused absences) or submission of an assignment based on an alternative assignment in agreement with the teacher.

Course curriculum

During the semester, the following topics will be reflected in connection with specific texts and works of art:
Primitive thinking
Senses as protomedia
The relationship between technology and man
Ontology and performativity
Crisis of representation

Aims

The aim of the course is to offer students a basic orientation in the historical changes of thinking in relation to technology and their role in the redefinition of man.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Teaching takes place in the classrooms of the KTDU FaVU BUT in the hours determined by the schedule. The minimum attendance is 85%. Make-up for missed classes is done in agreement with the teacher in the form of alternative assignments.
