The course will introduce students to contemporary English terminology in the following fields:
- building reconstructions, renovations and rehabilitation
- fire safety of buildings
- building physics

Technical vocabulary and phrases used in the building design and construction.

Prerequisites

B1 level in English according to CEFR.
Basic knowledge of professional Czech terminology in the fields of building renovations, building physics and technical systems.

Practice, technical vocabulary, tasks and presentations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Final evaluation on basis of consulted and completed reports and drawings. Clasification according to ECTS degree at the BUT Brno.

Course curriculum

1. Building reconstructions, renovations and rehabilitation: Comparison of historical development of construction industry in Czech Republic and other countries. Expansion of knowledge regarding the differences between Czech (German) and foreign (English) architecture.
2. Building reconstructions, renovations and rehabilitation: building surveys and their recording. Introduction to fundamental terminology describing the state of existing buildings (surveys, measurements, laboratory tests). Types of building surveys (structural, moisture, biocorrosion, etc.). Differences in contemporary ČSN and EN/ISO standards. Individual assignments of a renovation drawing in English according to EN/ISO standards.
3. Building reconstructions, renovations and rehabilitation: rehabilitation of biotic and abiotic damage. Introduction to terminology used during structural, moisture, biological and other rehabilitation works. Discussion about contemporary rehabilitation methods.
4. Consultations of assigned drawings. Assignment of (a part of) a written report (based on bachelor project) in English.
5. Fire safety in buildings: Introduction to contemporary terminology used in Czech Republic. Comparison of Czech and British approach to fire safety in buildings.
6. Building physics: Introduction to fundamental terminology in indoor climate, thermal protection of buildings, daylighting and acoustics.
7. Technical equipment in buildings: Water supply and sewage.
8. Technical equipment in buildings: HVAC.
9. Technical equipment in buildings: Electric wiring.
10. Consultations of assigned reports. Assignment of complex presentation of students' bachelor projects.
11. Classification. Presentation of students' bachelor projects. Final submission of drawings, reports and presentations.
