Course detail

Interactive storytelling

FaVU-1INSTAcad. year: 2021/2022

The concept of the course lies actually in a series of the acts in the form of experimental group exercises/discussions, and individual consultations and workshops focused on improvisation, self-recognition, playing, dialogue and critical reflection of author‘s approach in the artistic output, in connection to the expression, idea and movement, perceived through a choreographic framework.
The term Interactive Storytelling is more often used in the gaming environment of so called „open world“, but also, for example, in the immersive theatre. It is a narration of a story in which the actor influences the plot, as well as the environment itself through his acting, and vice versa - the environment influences the actor himself. When forming a construction of such an interactive story, it is necessary to identify as much potential interactions as possible in the network of participants, i.e. to realise and to recognize the environment elements and their choreography.
The choreography itself can be called a language, a sequential medium, an organizational structure of not only a dance, but also social situations, objects, space or expressions. It is sort of „extension“ on a global level. It organizes and thus hides things unrecognizable to us, it can reflect surrounding influences, structures, and cultural codes of social space. The tools of choreography can be at the same time used for analysis and production of anything.

The subject partly refers to the method of a „dialogical acting“, primarily used as an actor’s method in the form of a psychosomatic and communication discipline (Ivan Vyskočil is the author of this method). Part of the course will be also introductory theoretic familiarization with some movement forms, or forms of a physical theatre, contemporary dance - in connection with the critical theory.

Aims

The main principles of the course are often used in contemporary dance, physical theatre or clownship. The aim is to transform these principles in order that they could be used in the field of students‘ interests, in the process of ideas formation, or in common social space, to be involved into its dynamics, without necessary emphasis on the obvious physical activity. The base of this transformation lies in individual and collective dispositions of male and female students. Another aim of the course is to enable access to author's work ideological conditions distinguishing, and influence of the space. Students can use this kind of experience in forming of specific tools and methods in their own artistic output.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Classes will be held in the classrooms of the Department of Art Theory and History, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of BUT (Brno University of Technology), according to the schedule, and also individually as agreed with the lecturer. Minimum attendance 85 per cent. Missed lessons will be compensated in the form of alternative assignments, according to the agreement with the lecturer.
