Cultural Policy

The main content of the course consists of general issues of culture economy and mass media with emphasis on the creation of cultural policy. The structure of the seminars offers students insight into the problems of management, economy and operation of different types of cultural organizations in Brno.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able:
- Identify and summarize important issues of the economy of culture;
- Identify and describe current domestic and foreign economic trends in the automotive and creative industries;
- write an essay analyzing the selected problem in the field of the economy of culture;
- describe the factors that influence price formation in the art markets;
- compare and highlight differences in types of cultural policies;
- to analyze the current problems in the management at the seminar of the visited cultural institution in Brno.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lecture, discussion, essay, excursion.
Individual work of students:
Study of documents (annual reports, or reports on activity and management of visited organizations at a seminar), elaboration of an essay on a topic related to the issue of culture economy; from the seminar or from an external visit and / or translation of scientific paper from the field of culture economy.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Rating written essay.

Thematic plan of lectures:
1. Introduction to the course, role of cultural policy.
2. Cultural values and their evaluation.
3. Cultural policy, Czech Republic and selected countries
4. Cultural industries (subsectors): policies, social and economic background
5 .Cultural industries (subsectors): policies, social and economic background - Heritage.
6. Cultural industries (subsectors): policies, social and economic background - Visual arts.
7. Cultural industries (subsectors): policies, social and economic background - Galleries and theatre
8. Cultural industries (subsectors): policies, social and economic background - broadcasting.
9. Mass culture. Causes of its development, its position in contemporary society.
10. Other creative industries.
11.- 13. Seminars – are allocated during the semester as time allows managers selected cultural organizations.

Aims

After completing the course, students will be familiar with the ways of creating cultural policies in the world and in the Czech Republic, and will be familiar with the specifics of individual areas of culture and their institutions. They will also be acquainted with current trends in the current understanding of culture economy in the context of cultural and creative industries, as well as with statistical monitoring of cultural sector performance, or with methods of measuring its social and economic benefits.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Active participation in lectures and seminars, elaboration of seminar paper.
