Graphic design topics of today

The course develops the lecture series History of Graphic Design 1, 2 and focuses on selected topics of visual communication and design in general. The aim is to discuss current topics, to respond to current events in the field or outside, to read theoretical texts and to consider cultural and other contexts that influence contemporary design practice.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students develop critical thinking about the field, which is crucial for both graphic design practice and reception and visual communication analysis.

Prerequisites

Ability of critical work with text, basic orientation in visual culture and graphic design.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures, accompanying pictorial material in pdf presentation, lectures and pre-assigned literature followed by discussion in the seminar part of the course.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The condition of the colloquium is to create a pdf presentation on a given topic in the range of 15 min. The student will discuss the topic as a critical consideration in the cultural, technological, economic and historical context. Students will attend the colloquium depending on the number in one or several terms. They will present their papers within the colloquium and discuss the introduced topics in the group.

Strengthening students' ability to critically perceive the cultural, social, economic, political and aesthetic contexts in which visual communication emerged and emerges.
