Special experimental and theoretical methods in physical and applied chemistry based on the tasks of selected master thesises. Training of students‘ creativity by means of their individual laboratory projects. Record keeping in laboratory notebook.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will learn problem-solving techniques, individual creative work, recording and evaluation of laboratory data and will deepen practical skills in selected laboratory or theoretical techniques according to their individual selection.

Prerequisites

Chemical and instrumental analysis, theoretical essentials of physics or physical chemistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of specialized lab - 6 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for awarding the course-unit credit is realization of selected project and properly kept laboratory notebook.

Individual work according to instructions of student's supervisor. Keeping the laboratory notebook.

Mastering of problem-solving techniques, training in individual special laboratory or theoretical research work including data evaluation. Good laboratory notebook practices.

Regular laboratory attendance, laboratory notebook. Requirements for a good laboratory notebook:
1. Date of a record,
2. A Brief description of a research activity for each record individually,
3. The aim and motivation for the activity,
4. Description of the procedures made,
5. All data gained (weights, concentration, temperature, the list of used chemicals including their purity and origin. instruments ...),
6. A path to the stored data
7. Unusual observation
8. Page numbering
