Mobile Communication Systems

Data transmission in mobile networks, general introduction, multipath signal propagation, diversity, equalization. Data transmission at GPRS, EDGE and Evolved EDGE networks. Quality of Service measurement in GSM network, network optimization.
Third generation mobile system - UMTS. Basic principles, description of the WCDMA, frequency band, radio access network UTRAN, system architecture. UMTS TDD and UMTS FDD, main differences.
UMTS - architecture evolution (rel. 99, rel. 4, rel. 5), circuit switched and packet switched connection, handover, cell breathing, power control.
UMTS - OSI layer model, higher layers protocols, user and control plane, setup connection procedure. Network planning and management. Radio resources management, network simulation.
UMTS - high speed data rates connections HSPA (Release 06), HSDPA and HSUPA description, MBMS. Other 3G systems (Flarion, CDMA 2000, EVDO) and its comparison. Situation in Czech Republic.
LTE - Long Term Evolution, 3GPP release 08 standard. Physical layer description, OFDMA and SC-FDMA access method, advantage in comparison with CDMA. System flexibility, radio resources allocation.
LTE architecture, system properties. MIMO used configurations, impact on data throughput. Fast packet scheduling on radio interface.
LTE - radio resources management. Intersystem handover, concept of mobile terminal. LTE rel 10 standardization.
Wireless access networks (802.xx) - general description of standards, OSI layer model, physical and MAC layer. WLAN networks based on 802.11, description of amendments 802.11a, b, g, n and others.
WPAN standards, Bluetooth system, introduction, signal processing. ZigBee networks, protocols, applications.
WiMAX - technology, physical layer, access methods, MAC layer and its sublayers, network management, applications, security, QoS, future progress. Mobile WiMAX, services and applications.
LTE and Mobile WiMAX convergence towards 4G networks, LTE Advanced. Future generation networks (HAPS), communication beyond 60 GHz bands.
ITS networks, Car2Car and Car2X communications, definitions, system services. Wireless technologies used, channel modeling.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students become familiar with the conception and function of mobile communication systems and wireless networks with focus to data transmission and optimization on radio interface. They obtain also review about development of mobile communication systems in the near future.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested. Subject is related to BRMK.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students with the conception and function of mobile communication systems for data transmission used at present time in Czech republic and world-wide and suggest tendencies for mobile communications in the near future.

Basic conception and function of radio communication systems, Radio telephone system GSM - introduction, frequency bands, power levels signal processing, architecture.
Radio telephone system GSM - security management, data signal transmission (GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE).
Testing of Quality of Service in radio telephone network GSM, radio communication testers, TEMS programme.
Third generation systems UMTS, IMT 2000. Bit rate of signal, frequency bands, radio interface UTRA, system architecture.
UMTS - description of Releases (99, 5, 6), UMTS TDD, UMTS FDD, advantages and disadvantages, definitions of interfaces, transmission of voice and data, handover types, dynamicall cell area.
UMTS - Description of Core network, mapping of logical channels, signalling, procedures for call establishing, network management.
UMTS - connection with existing systems, implementation of the UMTS in Czech Republic, other 3G systems (Flarion), its comparison.
Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (802.20), differnces from UMTS, transport stream of standard DVB-H, area coverage.
