The outdoor Šilingrák Gallery is now adorned with a new artwork titled Foreign Stars, created by Olomouc-based sculptor and graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology (FFA), Jan Dostál. The sculpture, symbolizing the harmony of the universe, is the eighth installation on Šilingrovo Square and will be on display until next summer. The three-dimensional sculpture made of corten steel represents the fundamental structure of the universe and symbolizes its harmony based on perfect shapes and balance. The artwork consists of two sculptures titled Foreign Star I and Foreign Star II, each composed of twelve vertices and twenty faces, with a total weight of nearly 300 kilograms. For the first time, the artwork has added value this year, as the stars will glow at night, illuminating the surrounding public space. According to the author Jan Dostál, this was not part of the original plan, but the exhibition organizers were impressed by how the sculptures looked when lit, and they opted for a full installation including electrical wiring. Dostál works with a variety of materials and often uses small geometric elements and open structures, allowing viewers to peek into the inner space of the sculptures. He presents his works both in the Czech Republic and abroad. “I’ve known this location for a long time. I’ve liked it from the beginning because it’s an open gallery,” the sculptor commented on his first opportunity to exhibit in the streets of Brno.
