The Bohuslav Fuchs Award at FA BUT was dominated by bold and well-thought-out projects
The Bohuslav Fuchs Award at FA BUT was dominated by bold and well-thought-out projects
For the twenty-ninth time, the Bohuslav Fuchs Award was presented at the Faculty of Architecture of Brno University of Technology – an award recognizing student studio projects that annually highlight strong concepts, careful execution, and the courage to seek new answers to current architectural topics. This year's edition had a slightly festive atmosphere, as the faculty courtyard was adorned with an inflatable statue of Bohuslav Fuchs himself, commemorating the 130th anniversary of the birth of this significant figure of Brno modernism.

The award is organized by the student body of the Faculty of Architecture, which once again invited successful personalities from the contemporary architectural scene. The awards were decided by a four-member jury consisting of: Alexandra Timpau (alexshootsbuildings), Magdaléna Havlová (head of the new studio at FA CTU and founder of not at all office), Matúš Peklanský (studio gutgut), and Štěpán Matoušek (Ateliér Sever). The jury awarded
three main prizes for studios and three individual awards for outstanding student projects
. The selection reflected not only the quality of the outcomes but also the thoughtfulness of the assignments, the method of presentation, and the relevance of topics resonating with both the academic environment and current societal conditions.
Awarded studios: landscape, infrastructure, and microrealizations
The award for studio work went to
Studio Rozwałka
with the topic
Between Infrastructure and Nature
, which explored new relationships between technical structures and the landscape with an emphasis on ecological, urban, and symbolic layers. The jury was impressed not only by the complexity of the outputs but also by the poetic and critical dimensions of the assignment. Another award went to
Studio Palaščak
, whose topic
Diameter
addressed transport structures and their impact on urban morphology. Students managed to create exhibitions with a high architectural and graphic standard and a strong conceptual foundation. The trio was completed by
Lydie Šušliková’s Studio
, led jointly with Marek Hlavička and Petr Buryška, focused on the
Šlapanicko area
. The jury appreciated its contextual sensitivity, local engagement, and the ability to guide students toward both realistic and visionary approaches.
A hangar for every season
The winning student project was
Festival and 300 Boats
by the author team
Anna Kabeláčová
,
Zora Bogárová
, and
Vít Šarišský
. The jury praised its architectural and visual quality, thoughtful work with the site, and the conceptual overlap of a technical structure.
The hangar design responds to the specific seasonality of coastal Świnoujście. In winter, the hangar serves as shelter for up to three hundred boats; in summer, it fills with people and becomes part of cultural events and summer festivals.

A sauna built by students
Another winning project was a fully realized
sauna
by
Jana Vojtěška Skálová
,
Jan Bílek
, and
Martin Kuběna
. The students designed and built it themselves as part of a design-build process.
The jury was impressed not only by the quality of the design and material use but also by the realization itself, which demonstrates the ability to transform academic experience into a tangible structure. The students also succeeded in working in the spirit of material re-use and low-cost solutions.

Comprehensive conversion from a first-year student
An award was also given to
Markéta Chytilová
, a first-year bachelor’s student, for her project of
community housing
in a former administrative complex in Brno. It responds to the rise of remote work and addresses the issue of vacant office buildings.
The jury was impressed by her thoughtful work with the building’s conversion, emphasis on material recycling, a flexible modular system, and refined spatial solutions using varying floor heights and degrees of privacy. She was also recognized for being able, even as a first-year student, to formulate a strong, sustainable, and realistic design.
