Just a few steps from the Grand Hotel, Brno residents can now admire a pair of large-format murals depicting a wolf and a hare. The work was created as part of the Street Art project by EG.D and was created by the art studio Malujeme jinak. One of the authors is Lukáš Veselý, a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology (FFA). Muraly vlka a zajíce na Novobranské | Author: Courtesy of Malujeme jinak
The paintings, which together cover an area of over 200 m², are currently the largest of their kind in Brno. The wolf and the hare represent the clash between wisdom, experience, and perspective and youth, curiosity, and recklessness. The figures are complemented by motifs of wolf poppies and moon phases, whose symbolism emphasizes the contrast between the characters of the animals.
The work was created jointly by Lukáš Veselý and Aleš Veselý, who have been working together for fifteen years. The artists combined abstract painting and concrete elements using geometric shapes and collage and layering techniques.
The giant paintings overlook an unused plot of land on Novobranská Street, where a new development is planned for the coming years. "The site is basically a brownfield, and the owner plans to build on it within five years, so the paintings will disappear over time. We are glad that the murals will be here for at least a while and will liven up a place that no one really noticed before," comments Lukáš Veselý.
The studio Malujeme jinak (We Paint Differently) consists of Lukáš, Aleš, and Filip Veselý. The trio focuses on street art, graffiti, and especially large-scale murals, in which they combine their different styles. Lukáš Veselý, co-founder of the group, graduated in 2010 from the Drawing and Printmaking Studio at FFA.
The group became famous mainly for adorning transformer stations in Brno and Prague. Their most famous works in Brno include the "panelák" in Starý Lískovec, the painting of an owl in Obřany, Pater noster in Stará Street, the cubist portrait of Václav Havel in Milady Horákové Street, and the mural of matches and a monkey with a dove on a transformer station in Koliště Street. Brno University of Technology is regularly reflected in local street art, thanks to its current students and artists from and graduates of various faculties. For example, ground mural on Žerotínovo Square aims to revitalize the space in front of the Bílý dům policlinic. A graduate of Faculty of Business and Management (FBM) Klaudie Švrčková has breathed new life into old telephone booths in the center of Brno, decorating them with important figures and symbols associated with the city.
Another street art project is Partyzánky s motyčkou (Partisans with a Hoe) from FFA, which combines art, social anthropology, and community activism. Among the graduates of BUT is the cult street artist Timo, known for his stylized slogans in public spaces, who studied sculpture at FFA. The university will also make its mark on the newly renovated Brno Náplavka, where FFA and the Faculty of Architecture at BUT (FA) will take part in decorating the walls. The new murals on Novobranská not only expand the map of Brno street art, but also confirm that the work of BUT graduates and students is an increasingly visible part of the public space.
