EULiST BIP: Connecting Learning Through Real-World Challenges at the Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology

In October 2025, the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology hosted the EULiST Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) dedicated to Challenge-Based and Project-Based Learning (CBL and PBL). The programme brought together students and educators from five EULiST partner universities – Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic), Leibniz University Hannover (Germany), Institut Mines-Télécom (France), Technical University of Vienna (Austria), and the National Technical University of Athens (Greece).

The BIP explored new ways of teaching and learning that put students at the centre of the educational process. Both Challenge-Based and Project-Based Learning are methods that connect academic knowledge with real-life issues, encouraging participants to design creative, responsible, and practical solutions to contemporary challenges. Instead of receiving knowledge passively, students become active creators—identifying problems, developing ideas, and testing them through collaboration, reflection, and experimentation.

Throughout the week, the participants attended a series of inspiring lectures. Claudia Migliaccio (MIT) introduced the principles of Challenge-Based Learning and its transformative impact on university education. Julia Männel (Leibniz University Hannover) presented examples of successful project courses that link academic learning with industry and community collaboration, drawing from her experience leading Projects with Companies and Projects for Future courses at LUH. Rita Elvira Adamo focused on how education can address social challenges by connecting academic learning with local communities and real societal needs. Finally, Karin Písaříková (Brno University of Technology) discussed intercultural aspects of teaching and how diversity enriches both teamwork and learning outcomes.

The programme culminated in a hands-on workshop led by Radek Toman (Brno University of Technology), where mixed teams of students and lecturers developed outlines for new courses inspired by Challenge-Based and Project-Based Learning methodologies. Their task was to design learning experiences that reflect the expectations of today’s students—creative, interdisciplinary, and connected to real-world contexts.

Alongside academic activities, the BIP offered a rich cultural programme that allowed participants to explore Brno’s architectural and historical heritage. Visits included iconic sites such as Villa Tugendhat, Villa Stiassni, and the Brno Water Tanks, each illustrating the city’s unique architectural evolution and design culture.

The event demonstrated how EULiST universities can jointly create innovative educational environments that combine theory, practice, and social engagement. By working together, teachers and students from across Europe gained a deeper understanding of how learning through projects and challenges fosters not only knowledge and creativity, but also collaboration, empathy, and a sense of shared responsibility for the future.
