QS World University Rankings 2027: BUT maintains 4th place among Czech universities

Quacquarelli Symonds has released the latest edition of its QS World University Rankings (QS WUR), one of the three most closely watched assessments of the quality of higher education. The Brno University of Technology ranked 588th, confirming its position as the fourth-highest-ranked Czech university. In this year’s ranking, which included a record 8,808 institutions from 106 countries, 1,504 universities were included—placing Brno University of Technology among the top 7% of institutions worldwide.

Compared to last year, when BUT made a historic leap to 575th place, there was a slight drop of 13 positions. Nevertheless, the trend over recent years remains positive–since the 2024 edition, BUT has moved from the 611–620 range to an individual position within the top 600, and its overall score has risen to 28.7. BUT also significantly exceeds both the global median of the ranking (20.7) and the median of Czech universities (17.1).

Of the nine evaluation criteria, BUT performs best in the proportion of International Students (252nd in the world) and in International Research Network (388th), where BUT significantly exceeds both the global and Czech averages. BUT also maintains a strong position in the assessment of graduate attractiveness to employers (Employer Reputation – 403rd place).

BUT achieved its most significant year-over-year improvement in the area of Sustainability (score of 65.3 compared to last year’s 61.3), which reflects the university’s systematic approach to this agenda. There was also an improvement in the Faculty Student Ratio (a rise of 35 places to 509th). BUT also saw a slight improvement in Academic Reputation (a rise of 11 places to 680th), which, with a 30% weighting, is the most significant indicator in the ranking.

“This year’s 588th place in the QS rankings and 4th place among the evaluated universities in the country confirm that last year’s significant leap forward was no fluke, but rather a sustained trend. BUT maintains a stable position and easily surpasses both the domestic and global medians in most of the monitored indicators. Our greatest strength remains internationalization—whether it involves attracting talented students from abroad or collaborating on global research projects. I am also very pleased with our continued growth in the area of sustainability. These results confirm that we are on the right track, but they also serve as a clear signal regarding the areas that pose a challenge for further improvement,” commented Ladislav Janíček, Rector of BUT, on the results.

Among Czech universities, 16 institutions qualified for the QS WUR 2027 rankings. Charles University remains the highest-ranked Czech university (273rd), followed by the Czech Technical University in Prague (432nd) and Masaryk University (454th). BUT ranks fourth, ahead of the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague (652nd). The Prague University of Economics and Business is a newcomer to the rankings this year; conversely, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen is missing from the current edition.

The overall winner of the ranking is, as is traditional, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by Imperial College London and Stanford University.

This year’s evaluation drew on 21 million publications, 222 million citations, 1.6 million academic nominations, and 600,000 nominations from employers.
