Brno University of Technology (BUT) took part in an academic mission of Czech universities to the United States of America. A delegation of twelve universities, including rectors and vice-rectors, visited Cedar Rapids and Chicago over the course of a week, where they met with representatives of American universities, Czech academics and researchers based in the USA, as well as expatriate institutions. BUT was represented on the mission by Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Internationalisation Iveta Šimberová.The academic mission to the USA connected BUT with American universities, academics, researchers, and the expatriate community. | Author: DZSThe aim of the mission was to strengthen international cooperation and open up new opportunities for student and academic exchanges, joint research, and the development of innovation. The programme included visits to selected American universities, including the University of Iowa, the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, where the delegation held bilateral meetings with university leadership and individual faculties. The programme also featured networking meetings with American universities and other higher education partners, as well as working meetings with Czech academics based in the USA, alumni, and the expatriate community. The delegation also visited the Czech & Slovak Museum & Library and the Czech school T. G. Masaryk School. Meetings with the expatriate community in particular highlighted significant potential for future cooperation with the younger generation of expatriates. More than thirty Czech and Slovak schools operate in the USA and Canada, where children and young people learn the Czech language, history, and culture. Some of them are prepared to study in Czech, while many prefer English, which represents both an important opportunity and a challenge for Czech universities.
For BUT, participation in the mission represented an opportunity to establish new contacts and further develop cooperation, particularly in the field of research and innovation. The United States has long been one of the key partners of Czech universities, also due to the mobility of students and academics. In 2025 alone, more than 1,700 students from the USA came to the Czech Republic for exchange programmes. From the perspective of internationalisation, the North American region is highly promising for BUT, and an academic mission to Canada is also being prepared in the near future.A delegation of twelve universities, including rectors and vice-rectors, visited Cedar Rapids and Chicago over the course of a week. | Author: DZS“The academic mission to the USA confirmed for us that internationalisation today means much more than just the mobility of students and staff. It is above all about building relationships, trust, and long-term partnerships. In addition to meetings with major universities, we also met with Czech scientists, educators, and members of the expatriate community who maintain strong ties to the Czech Republic. It was particularly inspiring to see that the first concrete examples are already emerging of young people from expatriate backgrounds choosing to study at Czech universities. I see this as the first signs and at the same time as confirmation that systematic cooperation with expatriate communities can be an important pathway to attracting talented students to BUT and other Czech universities,” said the Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Internationalisation Iveta Šimberová.The mission programme included visits to selected American universities, including the University of Iowa, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University. | Author: DZSThe academic mission was organised by the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research (DZS) under the Study in Czechia initiative in cooperation with the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago. The mission built on previous activities aimed at connecting Czech universities with international partners and supporting long-term international cooperation.
In addition to BUT, other Czech universities also took part in the mission, including Masaryk University, Charles University and the Prague University of Economics and Business.
