Jmem Tek Introduced Its European Branch at BUT and Strengthened Cooperation in Semiconductor Security

Brno University of Technology (BUT) hosted a meeting of Czech and Taiwanese technology leaders on 17 April on the occasion of the ceremonial launch of the European branch of Jmem Tek. The event Securing the Silicon Future – Taiwan-Czechia Semiconductor Security Launch took place at the BUT Rectorate and brought together representatives of academia, industry, and public institutions from the Czech Republic and Taiwan. The main focus was on cooperation in semiconductor technologies and cybersecurity.

The Czech office of Jmem Tek represents the company’s first permanent presence in Europe and advances existing cooperation towards building a local research and technological base. “Establishing our first permanent European presence in Czechia is not just a geographic expansion, but above all a confirmation of our commitment to the European market and our strategic partners,” says John Chang, CEO of Jmem Tek. “With the new R&D centre, we are able to provide local technical support and work closely with local experts on developing advanced chip security solutions. Our vision is to combine Taiwan’s top-tier chip design expertise with Czechia’s strengths in system integration and cybersecurity, thereby strengthening the resilience of the global semiconductor supply chain,” he adds.

“The opening of Jmem Tek’s European branch is an important step in the development of Czech-Taiwanese cooperation in chip design and semiconductor technologies. It also confirms that linking academic research, education and industry can deliver tangible results,” says Jiří Háze, Director of ACDRC, Head of the Department of Microelectronics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC BUT), and Vice President of the Czech National Semiconductor Cluster for academia, education and research.

The ceremonial programme also included the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between Jmem Tek and the Czech National Semiconductor Cluster (CNSC), which will create a framework for joint activities in semiconductor security auditing and the development of international standards. “Cooperation with international technology companies is essential for the development of the European semiconductor ecosystem. The partnership with Jmem Tek strengthens the Czech Republic’s ability to participate in the development of secure and trustworthy semiconductor technologies,” adds Stanislav Černý, President of the Czech National Semiconductor Cluster.

The event also presented the results of the international initiative Advanced Chip Design and Research Center (ACDRC), which connects Taiwanese technology partners with Czech universities and supports research in chip design, semiconductor technologies and cybersecurity. The programme featured a panel discussion focused on the security of European semiconductor supply chains, with participation from experts from CyberSecurity Hub and industry representatives. The technical session also included PhD students from Brno University of Technology, who presented research results in the field of secure chips. These PhD students are actively involved in cooperation with Jmem Tek – some have already completed long-term research internships in Taiwan, while others are preparing to undertake them this year.

“The internship at Jmem Tek was a valuable experience for all of us – it allowed us to connect academic research with practical work in an international environment. In May, we are returning to Taiwan to measure the integrated circuit we designed during our previous internship,” adds Alexandr Matějka from the Department of Microelectronics at FEEC BUT.

Representatives of Taiwanese institutions, including the National Institutes of Applied Research and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague, also attended the ceremonial meeting, along with representatives of the City of Brno and the South Moravian Region. The event further deepened cooperation between the Czech and Taiwanese technological ecosystems in the field of strategic semiconductor technologies.
