The Association of Building Entrepreneurs and the leadership of the South Moravian Region annually announce the competition (in Czech laguage) for the best construction in the region. The goal is to showcase quality construction projects and their creators. In a separate section (in Czech laguage), students of construction-related fields can also compete with their term, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral theses.
Dean of FCE BUT Rostislav Drochytka at the award ceremony for the South Moravian Region Construction Award 2024. | Author: Svatopluk PelčákThis year, the jury awarded eight projects by students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT in Brno. The main themes were social or community housing and green construction.
The diploma thesis by Markéta Raková focuses on designing a multifunctional building as part of a community housing concept. The building is located in an area of former garden plots between an existing panel housing estate and open countryside. The author aimed to open up the currently inaccessible area, which forms a barrier for cyclists and pedestrians leaving the estate. She proposed five-storey buildings with green roofs and terraces, in line with the principles of so-called Baugruppe construction, sustainability, prefabrication, and associated construction speed and variability of interior spaces. She also uses wood as a key element to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Petr Otépka created an architectural study of a senior home as his diploma project. It builds upon an urban study developed in the previous semester in a Specialized Studio course. The result is a compact development with a functional mix that includes housing, commercial premises, public buildings, a church, a sports hall, and transport facilities, along with a block designated for senior housing. The design emphasizes compactness, resulting in individual pavilions forming a closed block with an inner courtyard and an adjoining park.
Design of a one-sided motorway rest area near Pasohlávky by Pavel Dědič.Another awarded diploma thesis by Pavel Dědič addresses the design of a one-sided highway rest area for the planned D52 motorway construction documentation. Out of three connection variants, he focused in detail on the one involving a collector lane, adding construction cost estimates and a visualization. The author proposes a one-way operation and, for clarity and safety, separates traffic into two groups – trucks and passenger vehicles. The design also includes a relaxation zone with a playground and parking for several types of vehicles.
The bachelor’s thesis by Jan Veniger analyzes water temperature in the water supply networks of the municipalities of Kanice and Řícmanice. Astacus technology, used by the BUT spin-off Voda Brno (in Czech laguage) for controlled flushing of water pipelines, was employed for temperature measurements. The author described the water temperature progression along various sections of the water mains and examined the influence of various assessed factors on the water temperature.
Panels for green facades manufactured using 3D printing. | Author: Jan VystrčilJan Vystrčil received an award for his doctoral thesis, in which he thoroughly described and analyzed vegetated facades and their impact on urban life quality. The work is based on experimental research that included daily measurements of temperature, humidity, and weight, as well as computer simulations and exploration of different systems and types of vertical greenery. We wrote more about the research and development of green facades in a recent article.
Ema Boďová succeeded with her term project Safiral Letovice, Filip Rajman with the conversion of the castle in Velké Němčice into a community center, and Vojtěch Trmač with his project for alternative or starter housing, HEX_CELL microhome.
The jury also recognized the term project of Sára Sochová from the Faculty of Architecture at BUT, who designed the independent culture center OXYMORON at Mendlovo Square in Brno.
All competition projects are exhibited (in Czech laguage) in building D of the Faculty of Civil Engineering on Veveří Street until the end of May 2025.Source: FCE BUT
