Artificial Intelligence Engages Participants of BUT's University of the Third Age

In June, BUT's University of the Third Age held a lecture at the BUT Market Hall Centre dedicated to modern technologies, particularly machine learning and artificial intelligence. During the lecture, participants learned about the significant progress achieved in recent years in the fields of optical character recognition, natural language processing, and machine translation.

The lecture featured practical demonstrations focused on optical character recognition (OCR). Participants had the opportunity to try processing a German text written in Fraktur script dating from the late 18th century. More advanced demonstrations using deep learning included processing Arabic text, whose script is characterized by letters that are usually connected in continuous strokes and whose shapes generally depend on their position within a word. As a result, identifying the boundaries between individual characters can sometimes be challenging. Attention was also given to ligatures, which are found in Fraktur script as well.

The lecture concluded with a discussion on machine translation, illustrated by examples showing that human expertise still plays an irreplaceable role in translating certain types of texts. The many questions raised by participants throughout the lecture confirmed the strong interest in the topic of artificial intelligence.

“We are delighted by the active participation of everyone who attended. Their enthusiasm and lively discussion confirmed that the University of the Third Age is a place where people can learn together, discover new knowledge, and discuss topics that shape both our present and our future. We would like to thank all participants for creating such a wonderful atmosphere and for their thought-provoking questions,” said Kamila Zoufalá, Coordinator of BUT's University of the Third Age.

Would you like to become part of the University of the Third Age community? Registration for the 2026/2027 academic year is still open. While many courses are already full, several still have places available. If you would like to continue exploring new topics and expanding your knowledge, we would be delighted to welcome you. The full course offer is available on the BUT University of the Third Age website.

In September, you can also take part in the Repair Day, held as part of BUT Sustainability Week. We are looking for participants who can repair small household appliances, sew, knit, crochet, care for plants, or have other practical skills they would like to share with others. Intergenerational exchange of knowledge and experience is the main idea behind the event. If you would like to get involved as a volunteer adviser or repair expert, please contact us by the end of August at udrzitelnost@vut.cz.
