Profile

PhD study of Constructions and Traffic Structures study branch is focused on a scientific training, methodology of research work and research development in the fields of structural theory, reliability and failure mechanism of structures. There are several study directions - structural mechanics, concrete and masonry structures, steel, timber and composite structures, geotechnics, railway structures, roads structures, experimental work and building testing.
Scientific preparation is based on knowledge of theoretical disciplines of natural sciences base together with theoretical and scientific disciplines of water management orientation. Graduate of PhD study is ready to work in research and development, using creative approach for problems solving of progressive structures including traffic structures. Continuous active scientific and pedagogical activity is a good condition for eventual qualification of graduates as academic employees at Universities.

    An important factor for the design of the structure is přesypávané earth pressure due to compaction. Simulation of compaction effects in numerical models is still not resolved. The theme of the dissertation is to analyze the possibility of introducing compaction effects and the influence of constitutive model.

  10. New Application of Innovated Pulse Ultrasonic Method for the Testing of Physical-Mechanical Properties of Ceramic Building Materials

    Operation and calibration of a modern two-channel ultrasonic pulse apparatus. Excitation with ultrasonic probes and oscilloscopic evaluation with the possibility of checking the process. Testing the suitability of other excitation possibilities enabling two-channel imaging. Refinement of results in problematic cases of measurement. Possibility of increasing the scope of the method. Extending the application of the method by separating the measurement base from the excitation point.

  11. Numerical analysis of damage and fracture of advanced building materials based structures

    Appropriate structural design from advanced building materials is conditioned by the ability of prediction of real response obtained by robust computational tools with implementation of proper failure models based on non-linear fracture mechanics.

  12. Numerical analysis of the interaction of primary and secondary lining at conventionally mined tunnels

    In the design of a secondary (permanent) lining of conventionally mined tunnels the action of primary (temporary) lining is neglected, though its estimated life usually reaches tens of years. By including the action of the primary lining in the design of the secondary lining it is possible to provide considerable material savings. The aim of the thesis is to find the optimal calculation method of such interaction using numerical modeling by finite element method.

    The increase of crude oil prices influences the prices of bituminous binders as one of the basic components for the production of asphalt mixtures. The use of RAP becomes therefore more and more actual. The theses should be aimed at possibilities and restrictions of various recycling technologies of asphalt mixtures.

  25. Verification and determine the possibilities of determining a method of evaluation the quality of surface layers of concrete

    Currently there are many of non-destructive and destructive methods for determining the quality of the surface layer of concrete, which has a major impact on his durability. The best known and most used methods are applicable only in the laboratory and not bound to any of the methods that can be carried in-situ. Planned output is to follow up the value of laboratory techniques and methods used in in-situ.

  1. Analysis of nonlinear fracture of structural materials using acoustic emission and radiography

    Majority of structural materials can be categorized, from the material failure point of view, as quasi-brittle or ductile. They are characteristic by formation and propagation of sizeable nonlinear zone in front of the tip of a defect that causes violation of their integrity. Capturing the nonlinear zone influence is the key to significant improvement in accuracy of the failure description. Nonlinear zone characterization will be conducted via advanced experiments (AE, X-ray) and simulations.

  2. Analysis of structures subjected to impact loading

    Response of structures during rapid changes in conditions is significantly different from the static behavior. The solution has to be considered with a number of non-linear dependencies.

  3. Analysis of the failure proceses of railway sleepers

    Pre-stressed reinforced concrete railway sleepers are among the most massively produced and used structural members. Their failure under different loadings concerning both boundary conditions (laboratory tests under three-point bending - quality-controlling tests, when placed in the railway superstructure) and type of the loading (static, dynamics, fatigue). Attention will be paid to detailed modelling of failure in selected parts of the sleeper. The work will contain also related experiments.

  4. Assessment and Prediction of the Concrete Cover Layers Durability

    Topic deals with the study of problems of concrete cover layers durability and contribute to development of the knowledge in the eld of durability assessment and evaluation. The first output is to generate the relationships between quality classications determined by non-standardized and standardized testing methods. The second output of this project is to develop a recommendation for the uniform classication of the concrete cover layers determined by dierent testing method.

    Research of new bituminous mixtures, determination their functional characteristics and the use of laboratory test results in Performance pavement design method.     Student will be working on modelling of damage in concrete and other heterogeneous materials using discrete approaches. The work will include development of the model, theoretical derivations, implementation (coding of software), validation, verification and also application of the model.

    Durability is one of the most important property of civil engineering and close to this branch structural members. The same is important for used materials.   15. Limits and requirements for establishing and declaring the characteristics of the materials of construction of transport structures.

    In determining the structural characteristics of building materials and products is used relatively large number of test methods. The aim is to identify and determine the relevant characteristics of construction materials, primarily affecting the durability of structures and their associated test methods followed by a critical assessment of whether they are satisfactory for the intended purpose. The results may be reflected in industry regulations of Department of transport of Czech Republic.

    Theoretical and experimental analysis of the resistance of composite steel-concrete and timber-concrete structural members and components with qualitatively higher properties (load-carrying capacity, stiffness, fire resistance) will be focused on increasing in their reliability and economy, using the effective combination of advanced materials with better properties and the suitable cross-section configuration. The theoretical solution will be based on the analytical methods and numerical modelling, which will be verified applying experimental approaches.

    The theme suppose the analysis of contacts of bodies of arbitrary shapes. In the first stage it is supposed to solve the problém of cables on pulley including the move of the nodes of the cables through the wheelůs of pulleys. In the second stage the theme would include general analysis of contacs of bodies.

    Applying the stochastic calculation models, statistical sensitivity and probabilistic limit state studies of steel structures will be studied. Numerical simulation methods and nonlinear FEM calculation models which, in mathematical form, include the knowledge of structural mechanics, elasticity and plasticity theory of structures and/or of other branches, represent the fundamentals for computational stochastic models.

  34. The role of fracture process zone in failure of quasi-brittle materials

    Fracture of quasi-brittle materials is the main scope of the research. Crack propagation is studied from the perspective of current approaches to fracture modelling - analytical models and numerical simulations - and experiments. Attention is paid to the role of nonlinear zone evolving in front of the propagating crack in the fracture description. Effects of size, geometry and free boundaries of the body are studied in context with the existence of this zone.
