Consumer Chemistry

Original title in Czech: Spotřební chemieFCHAbbreviation: BPCO_SCHAcad. year: 2013/2014

Programme: Chemistry and Chemical Technologies

Length of Study: 3 years

Accredited from: 20.7.2005Accredited until: 31.7.2017

Profile

The objective of the study program is to provide students with general background in the field of technical chemistry with the focus on consumer chemistry technologies and to train student creativity and independence. The graduates are supposed to work in production of fine chemicals; in cosmetic industry; housing and household chemistry; manufacture of agricultural, medical, and curative preparations; in printing and image processing industries; production of paints and lacquers; plasma-chemical technologies; processing and application of biopolymers and technical textiles etc. They can hold the positions of highly qualified workers; technologists; positions in lower or middle management; positions of research and development assistants; and after proper training they can promote to the positions of development workers. Graduates are also supposed to work in service departments like quality control or registration divisions etc. Nevertheless, they can apply to study master programs accredited at the faculty.

Key learning outcomes

Graduates acquire basic knowledge and skills including laboratory working skills in the field of technical chemistry with the focus on inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, and chemical engineering. The above chemistry foundations represent a base for further specialization in consumer chemistry technologies. According to the branch of consumer chemistry they specialize in, the students will be educated in the following fields: surface treatment of materials; housing and household chemistry; print, image processing and coloristic technologies; and technological processing or production of biopolymers, sorbents, and technical textiles. Students develop laboratory working skills to advanced level which enables their independent fulfilment of assigned tasks. They also undergo a thorough training in general English and mainly English for specific purposes, and, moreover, they are educated in optional general humanistic and technical disciplines such as quality control, psychology and sociology, technical and engineering drawing or measurement techniques. Graduates are also familiar with the use of modern information technologies in chemical industry (e.g. in technological regulations, calculations, statistical processing and graphical representation and databases) and other related fields like logistics and trade.

Entry requirements

Written entrance examination test checks ability/competence of applicants to study chemistry at university level. Applicants are given points for correct answers; a notional pass mark is applied to this examination. The applicants will be enrolled on condition of either successful passing the entrance examination or fulfilment of requirements for granting dispensation. Current information on admission regulations is available at http://www.fch.vutbr.cz/cs/zajemce-o-studium/bakalarske-studium.html.
