Geodesy and Cartography

Original title in Czech: Geodézie a kartografieFASTAbbreviation: GAcad. year: 2013/2014

Programme: Geodesy and Cartography

Length of Study: 3 years

Accredited from: 30.5.2003Accredited until: 30.5.2013

Profile

The aim of the bachelor’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography with a standard duration of 3 years is, in accordance with the Higher Education Act (Act No. 111/1998), to provide theoretical, specialised and practical knowledge and skills in the field of the geodetic and cartographic sciences as well as the related sciences which will enable graduates to continue in the consecutive master’s study programme for this field of study, or immediately apply the knowledge gained in their bachelor’s studies in land surveying and cadastral practice.
The bachelor’s study programme is purposefully aimed at the preparation of students for professional practice, as well as at the creation of a basis for further studies in the consecutive master’s study programme. In the first four semesters students gain the necessary knowledge from subjects providing the theoretical background of the field and the specialised geodetic background, and also law, economics, information technology and subjects providing a general professional background. This foundation is further developed in specialized subjects providing information about geodetic and cartographic methods and technologies. Theoretical knowledge gained in specialised subjects is applied in practice in order to master modern surveying and processing techniques. Such subjects involve the active usage of computer technology, and not only in the classrooms, but also during practical training in the field. Every year of the study programme includes several weeks of field instruction. Graduates obtain knowledge that will enable them to work in the field of property registry, with all types of mapping and on basic tasks in the area of engineering surveying.

Key learning outcomes

Graduates are able to work with the majority of geodatabases to produce required outputs. They are able to independently create maps for various purposes, ranging from direct land surveying in the field, to data processing, the creation of digital maps and other outputs, including visualization applications. Graduates are capable of processing source data collected by the most modern surveying methods (satelite measurements, land and aerial photogrammetry, land and aerial scanning, etc.). The main aim of the course is to develop theoretically and practically educated professionals ready for the majority of contemporary geodetic and cartographic tasks in industry. Graduates should also be able to continue their studies, specialising further, in a consecutive master’s study programme.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Graduates of the bachelor’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography are able to work in state administration (at a Land Registry Office, State Land Office, etc.), where they are able to carry out all basic activities (the checking and recording of geometric plans and their details, work on the digitization of cadastral maps, work on the redevelopment of the property register via new mapping, documentation work, etc.). In the private sector, graduates can find employment with private surveying firms where they may contribute to the making of new geometric plans, the demarcation of lot boundaries, the making of special-purpose maps, the surveying of work done during construction, the surveying of completed work carried out on existing buildings, the surveying of individual overhead and underground wiring installations and other utility networks, including their registration and updating in the appropriate databases and geoinformation systems.
