Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan and one of the chief components of the connective tissue or extracellular matrix. Thanks to its properties, mainly its biocompatibility, hyaluronic acid is a promising material for scaffold preparation in the field of tissue engineering. The main object of the dissertation will be the development of hyaluronic acid-based hydrogels as a support for bone defect healing. The developed materials will be studied in terms of their chemical composition, mechanical properties, conditions of crosslinking reactions, kinetics of gelation etc. Also, factors influencing the mentioned parameters and enabling their optimisation for the intended use will be studied. Hydrogel will contain substances supporting cell migration from surrounding tissue into the hydrogel, cell adhesion, differentiation, proliferation and the production of new extracellular matrix and thus bone healing. Therefore, the biological properties of the developed hydrogels and their effect on cell function and viability will be studied. During their doctorate, the candidate shall cooperate with experts on material engineering, organic chemistry, biology, medicine etc.

Practical applications of photochemical initiated polymerisations in heterogeneous systems, especially on modification of polymeric surfaces using covalently attached polymeric layers. Other part will be focused on photochemical polymerisation in thin film or in bulk. There will be examined influences of used initiating systems and reaction mechanisms on the yield and conditions of polymerisations. The goal of thesis is to develop new practical applications, especially on the field of 2D and 3D polymerisation technologies.
