This bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of exterior automotive lighting in the context of the "Dark appearance" design trend, which requires the visual concealment of the internal optics of an inactive lamp. The standard use of passive absorption filters fulfills this requirement, but at the cost of a permanent reduction in light transmittance, which significantly increases the energy and thermal demands on the primary LED sources. Based on a theoretical analysis of various electro-optic materials from the "Smart glass" category, the SPD (Suspended Particle Device) film technology was selected as the most suitable alternative to passive filters. In the practical part, its experimental optical characterization was subsequently performed, including the measurement of directional transmittance and light scattering, spectral analysis, and visual evaluation on a functional rear lamp demonstrator. The results demonstrated that the SPD film features a high dynamic range. In the inactive state, it successfully masks the internal structure, while in the active state, it transmits significantly more light than the reference passive filters. The physical limits of the material were also revealed, particularly a higher degree of directional light scattering and spectral instability. The visual evaluation confirmed better signal transmission through the SPD film, albeit with a slight color shift and a higher degree of surface reflections in the off state. From a technical and engineering perspective, the technology requires further development and comprehensive testing prior to immediate deployment; however, it represents a solution with high application potential.
