This master's thesis deals with the design of a method for recognizing vehicles and their license plates. The method is designed for use on the Intel Atom x7433RE hardware platform and integrated Intel iGPU, or on an external accelerator connected to this platform. The first chapter discusses the image processing chain and methods of motion detection in images. The second chapter focuses on machine learning, neural networks, and training and validation methods. It also describes six machine learning models for real-time object detection in images. The third chapter explains what machine learning hardware accelerators are and what types there are. The fourth chapter compares various accelerators available on the market in specified categories and selects one for which a recognition method will be designed. The fifth chapter is devoted to the design of the recognition method along with deep comparison of 10 different recognition methods. Sixth chapter then uses the best performing method from previous chapter and uses it in C++ code which runs the whole designed pipeline of vehicle detection.
