The bachelor’s thesis focuses on the design of a new residential and mixed-use complex in the mountain village of Bělá pod Pradědem. The project’s primary objective is to address flood crises and the shortage of affordable housing. The site is located outside the Q100 floodplain on a sloping plot. The functional program of the design combines apartment buildings for long-term rental, tourist apartments that can be converted into emergency housing for residents who have lost their homes to flooding, and a mixed-use building with a food service facility (a bakery and pizzeria). This facility serves as a social catalyst that, thanks to its all-day operation, activates the ground floor and naturally connects permanent residents, tourists, and the local community. The architectural concept is based on full respect for the sloping topography of the terrain. The strategic placement of the building masses minimizes the need for landscaping and defines spaces ranging from public areas to private ones. A key tectonic element is the principle of targeted subtraction (“carving out”) of the base structure, creating covered parking spaces, sheltered entrances, and spacious outdoor terraces. The complex’s visual expression represents a modern interpretation of traditional Jeseníky architecture. It employs an archetypal rectangular floor plan and a gable roof without overhangs. The use of natural yet contemporary materials—particularly on the facade—ensures that the building fits harmoniously and respectfully into the natural and cultural context of the mountain landscape. The result of this project is a sustainable, safe, and vibrant community space that provides the town with new impetus for its future development.
