The subject of this bachelor’s thesis is an architectural study of a complex of three buildings in the “Lágr” area of the village of Bělá pod Pradědem (cadastral district of Adolfovice, Jeseník District, Olomouc Region). The design directly addresses two key challenges facing the Jeseník region: the long-standing shortage of affordable housing and the region’s vulnerability to periodic flooding. The architecture sensitively interprets the traditional form of the “Jeseník house” and translates it into a modern language that respects the scale of the surrounding development as well as the strict regulations of the Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area. The urban design defines a triad of buildings operating on the principles of PERMANENCE (apartment building), TEMPORARINESS (temporary accommodation), and READINESS (tourist hub). The buildings are oriented longitudinally along the contour lines, thereby minimizing the extent of terrain cuts and preserving the natural landscape character of the sloping site. The main theme of the project is the site’s ability to adapt to crisis situations without the need for structural modifications. While in normal operation the apartments and the HUB serve to support the local tourism economy, in the event of a flood crisis they seamlessly “switch” to emergency mode. The apartments transform into self-sufficient emergency housing for families affected by the disaster, the attic shelter provides immediate refuge, and the HUB’s ground floor serves as a logistics base. The architectural expression draws on the archetype of the Jeseník house and interprets it in a modern language. The development of the building’s form employs a dynamic interplay of mass and additions. The result is an operationally sustainable model with a total accommodation capacity for approximately 55 people (of which 35 beds serve as emergency beds), which strengthens social stability and increases the region’s overall preparedness for flood crises.
