The city of Most, once a showcase of Czechoslovak late-modernist architecture, is currently undergoing a transformation into a contemporary modern city. Developments from the 1960s to the 1980s are now facing widespread aging and require essential revitalization.

One of the focal points of this transformation is the building of the Most Municipal Library. Following the library’s relocation to the Repre building in the center, this characteristic five-story structure will be vacated, making it an ideal candidate for conversion. Its primary occupants are set to be Most’s primary art schools, which will gain new classrooms and halls. However, the building’s original architectural typology no longer meets modern requirements, necessitating extensive modifications.

The central theme of the new design is the preservation of the exterior facade and the building’s characteristic tiered structure. This sensitive approach is intended to help the residents of Most adapt to the otherwise rapid changes in their city’s landscape. Another key element is the relocation of the main entrance and its new orientation toward Opavia Park. These two steps complement each other through intentional contrast, much like cutting into a cake, a visual tension is created between the preserved outer facade and the entirely new spatial slice.
