This thesis investigates the principles of IVIM MRI and the directional IVIM tensor model as tools for non-invasive characterization of microvascular architecture in tissues. A complete simulation pipeline was developed in which flow parameters were extracted for individual segments within realistic microvascular networks, particle tracking was performed with subpixel precision within these networks alongside simulations of both isotropic and anisotropic diffusion, and the resulting motions were used to generate a synthetic MRI signal. From the generated signals, the D, f and D* tensors were extracted, and their parameters were compared against reference values derived directly from the vascular network geometry, allowing evaluation of the model's ability to capture the degree of vascular organization and dominant vessel orientation. The model's functionality was further demonstrated on real MRI data of a perfusion phantom and a rat brain.
