Abstract:

Teoretická část popisuje koncept cílové impedance a neideální chování kondenzátorů, cívek a feritových perel, včetně vlivu ESR, ESL a parazitních parametrů DPS.

Student nejprve zpracoval teoretický rozbor problematiky power integrity, cílové impedance, reálného chování kondenzátorů, feritových perel a vlivu parazitních parametrů plošného spoje. Poté navrhl vlastní čtyřvrstvý referenční plošný spoj s aktivní spínanou zátěží a měřicími konektory.
Student provedl DC analýzu úbytku napětí, před-layoutové SPICE simulace několika variant osazení filtrační sítě a následně post-layoutovou elektromagnetickou analýzu v Keysight ADS/PIPro. Porovnává vliv tloušťky vrstev plošného spoje, rozmístění kondenzátorů a počtu prokovů a výsledky poté interpretuje z hlediska skutečných parazitních indukčností. Zde poněkud postrádám analýzu vlivu umístění prokovů přímo do pájecích plošek součástek (via-in-pad). Experimentální ověření na vyrobeném prototypu zahrnuje měření v časové oblasti i impedanční měření metodou two-port shunt-through na profesionálním laboratorním VNA i levném LiteVNA. Uvedené výsledky velmi pěkně ukazují, které konstrukční parametry mají pro daný návrh reálný význam.
Zadání považuji za splněné v plném rozsahu. Autor prokázal velmi dobré znalosti návrhu elektroniky, simulace napájecích sítí i vysokofrekvenčního měření.
Celkově jde o velmi kvalitní bakalářskou práci s výrazným realizačním a experimentálním přesahem. Student prokázal samostatnost, technickou vyspělost a schopnost kriticky porovnat simulaci s měřením. Reviewer’s report
Ing. Jan Král, Ph.D.

The presented thesis analyzes power delivery network impedance in electronic systems. The theoretical part provides a solid background. I really appreciate the measurements of the power delivery network (PDN) impedance on both professional and low-cost VNAs and their comparison with the performed simulations. Formally, the thesis is at a high level; the language and readability are very good. Despite these positives, I find several major issues in the thesis.

Bogatin in Bogatin's Practical Guide to Prototype Breadboard and PCB Design (2021) recommends avoiding different capacitor values. The presented thesis neither respects nor analyzes these newer recommendations and instead follows the older rule-of-thumb recommendation to combine multiple capacitors. This is the most important weakness of the thesis – instead of guiding designers from outdated practices toward current recommendations, the thesis unfortunately does the opposite.

In chapter 4.4.2, the author modifies the geometry to achieve better PDN impedance; however, the individual variants are not presented clearly enough. There are figures for only two out of the three variants, and the PCB design for Variant 3 is cropped in such a way that it is difficult to understand what changed compared to Variant 1.

The thesis also mentions ferrite beads as a filtering option. However, Bogatin and others do not recommend using ferrite beads without a proper analysis. The general rule should be: do not use them until you really know what you are doing. The thesis mentions ferrite beads in the theoretical introduction but does not clearly explain the associated design risks.

There are a few issues with the reference design as well. When designing the blocking capacitors for U2, the author selects a parallel combination of 1 µF and 470 nF, which is against the thesis’s own recommendations. The triggering signal for U2 is not terminated. PCB routing is also suboptimal and could be improved.

The thesis assignment encouraged simulation and EM radiation analysis. Neither of these was performed, even though the last assignment point explicitly asked for topology optimization to improve EM radiation. It is difficult to evaluate whether any improvement was achieved when no EM radiation simulations were carried out. The first assignment point also assumed an analysis of noise attenuation requirements, which the author neglected as well.

Despite the solid amount of work presented in the thesis, I must conclude that the final findings are inconsistent with the current state-of-the-art knowledge. Therefore, I have no other choice than to evaluate this thesis with 59 points / grade E. If the author demonstrates sufficient maturity in the topic and responds convincingly to all questions during the defence, I would agree with a higher final grade. Topics for thesis defence:
  1. Modify your worst-case scenario by including C1 and adding an additional damping resistor of 50 mΩ in series with C1. Simulate the scenario and add the results to Fig. 4.3. Analyze the behaviour of this new worst-case scenario in comparison with your best-case scenario, focusing on the resonance close to 700 MHz. Present the chart and explain which scenario provides better performance for high-speed digital circuits operating above 600 MHz. Also explain what the upper frequency limit for PDN impedance analysis should be and why.
  2. In your thesis, the load resistors limit the maximum response frequency of the load circuitry. Defend your calculations for selecting 5-W resistors. Present alternative ways to increase the maximum response frequency of the switched load.
