This diploma thesis builds upon a pre-diploma research project focused on the area of Staré Brno, which explored the locality through interviews with its residents and their everyday experiences. Over time, it became evident that the issues of the area cannot be reduced to individual urban voids, but are caused by broader relationships, particularly the quality of public space, the dominance of car traffic, and the weakening of community ties. The thesis therefore shifts from isolated interventions towards the design of a larger urban unit – the former Kras industrial site, understood as a “large urban void” within the city structure. The aim is to examine whether an architectural and urban design approach can create an environment that is calmer, more permeable, and more oriented towards everyday life. The proposal is based on the superblock principle, where vehicular traffic is redirected to the perimeter of the site, while the interior is primarily dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists. Emphasis is placed on the creation of high-quality public spaces that support movement, stay, and spontaneous social interaction. At the same time, it acknowledges that community cannot be designed, but only supported through conditions that enable its emergence. The outcome is a proposal that does not aim merely to complete the urban fabric, but rather to explore an alternative model of the city – one that rebalances priorities between mobility, public space, and everyday life.
