With the increasing number of communication devices, the current infrastructure of terrestrial 5G networks is becoming insufficient to cover remote locations. The goal of this master’s thesis is to explain the use of satellite communication in 5G networks, referred to as Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). The theoretical part focuses on describing 5G technology, with an emphasis on the specifics and integration possibilities of satellite systems. The practical part is dedicated to working with the Network Simulator 3 (NS-3) simulation tool. One of the objectives is to set up this simulator along with the key NS-3-NTN and LENA-NB (or LENA 5G) modules. To fulfill the thesis requirements, the simulator was significantly extended with a realistic random access model and the calculation of satellite orbits. These modifications enabled the modeling of the dynamic movement of real constellations, including handovers. The result of the thesis is a functional system for simulating NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) NTN with real constellations. An additional demonstration of the system’s capabilities confirmed that denser satellite constellations effectively mitigate network access congestion.
