This thesis presents the design, implementation, and experimental verification of an active compensation system for the suppression of external electromagnetic interference in scanning electron microscopes. The thesis begins by introducing the principles of image formation in scanning electron microscopy and analyzing the mechanism by which external alternating electromagnetic fields adversely affect the resulting image. The fundamental limitations that constrain all active compensation systems are then described, namely the spatial mismatch between the field measured at the sensor and the field acting on the electron beam, and the temporal mismatch between the measurement of the external field and the application of the corresponding correction to the beam. The design of a complete compensation system is subsequently introduced, combining a sensitive fluxgate magnetometer for field measurement, custom-designed signal-conditioning electronics, and software for calibration and for the generation of the compensation signal. The system was integrated with a commercial scanning electron microscope and characterized through a series of experiments under controlled electromagnetic disturbance. The results confirm a substantial suppression of the image distortion caused by external interference, with a suppression factor of 68× achieved at the calibrated frequency, matching the cancellation factors specified for commercially available systems. The measurements further reveal the limitations of the proposed system in terms of the frequency and amplitude of the external disturbance.
