Abstract:

The subject of this bachelor’s thesis is an apartment building, its design and project documentation. The proposed building is located in Kuřim. It has three above ground floors, a basement and an accessible rooftop area. The structural design utilizes a combined system: vertical load-bearing elements are made out of ceramic masonry blocks, while the horizontal elements are made out of hollow core panels, monolithic reinforced concrete slabs and a single skin flat roof. The building is supported by a reinforced concrete raft foundation. The external walls are insulated using a certified thermal insulation system ETICS. The thesis moreover includes a schematic design of heating, domestic hot water preparation and ventilation systems, as well as technical assessments in building physics and fire safety.

Process of defence

The student presented her bachelor's thesis, the building's location, and the basic design parameters. She also presented the proposed structural system and material selection. The student also presented the assessment of the building that she had conducted. The student then responded to the oponent's questions. The student was asked: - why was this particular site selected for the proposed building? - what were the main reasons for choosing the proposed structural and material system? - explain the flat roof plan. What elements are shown, and what are the basic terms and design principles associated with flat roof design? - why was the building positioned on the site in a way that requires an external staircase at the entrance? - how is the connection of the staircase structure detailed, and how is acoustic insulation addressed at the joint? The student, demonstrating a thorough grasp of the subject matter, provided expert responses to all of the opponent’s comments and also answered all of the committee members’ questions regarding the thesis with great skill.
