This thesis investigates routes to prepare large-scale graphene membranes and introduces ways of selective growth of nanostructures on them. The approach is based on a shadow mask technology, where a patterned mask is suspended in proximity to the free-standing graphene membrane in order to achieve deposition selectivity. Gallium nano-droplets are formed under controlled temperature conditions in order to force their final size. The presence of hydrogen and the effect of the gallium droplets are evaluated via Raman spectroscopy, after scanning electron microscopy analysis. The results provide comprehensive guidance for engineering graphene membranes as platforms for patterned nano-structure growth and for future integration into nano-electric and sensing devices.
