The diploma thesis deals with the design of an interpretive memory center in the city of San Miguel de Tucumán in northwestern Argentina. The project is situated on the site of the former detention center Galpón 9, which during the military dictatorship served as a place of imprisonment, torture, and forced disappearances of civilians. The proposal responds to the historical trauma of the site through architecture, landscape, and public space.
The main idea of the project is the creation of a symbolic path of memory that guides visitors from pain, silence, and enclosure toward social dialogue, acceptance of the past, and a return to life. The architecture of the individual buildings gradually transforms from massive and introverted forms into more open and transparent structures.
The interpretive center consists of a memorial museum, gallery spaces, administrative and educational facilities, and a cultural square. The architectural design works with the local material context, perforated façades, filtered light, and ecological principles responding to the subtropical climate of Tucumán.
