This master’s thesis deals with the occurrence of hazardous substances during municipal waste sorting operations, with a particular focus on batteries and small electrical devices containing battery cells. The work is based on the case of the automated sorting line operated by SAKO Brno, a.s., where incorrectly sorted batteries may pose risks mainly in terms of fire, mechanical damage, electrolyte leakage and operational safety. The thesis includes a description of the technological process of the sorting line, identification of critical points and development of a methodology for monitoring the occurrence of batteries in selected material streams. The proposed procedure was practically verified during sampling campaigns, in which selected waste streams were monitored and hazardous items were recorded. The collected data were evaluated from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives and subsequently used to assess the main risks within the sorting process. Based on the analysis, technical, organisational and preventive measures are proposed to reduce the probability of incidents and improve the safety of municipal waste sorting operations.
