This master's thesis addresses the design and construction of CNC electrical discharge machine (EDM). The work begins with a study of the physical principles of electrical discharge machining, describing the influence of pulse parameters on material removal rate, electrode wear, and surface quality. A literature review covers commercially available EDM die-sinkers, wire-cut EDMs, deep-hole drillers, and micro-EDM machines. Based on a system analysis, four design variants are proposed – two full-featured die-sinkers and two machines specialized for deep-hole EDM drilling. The optimal variant, a deep-hole EDM machine with a lower gantry portal structure, is described in detail and fully elaborated. The thesis includes a component accuracy analysis, drive calculations for all machine axes, a risk assessment according to EN ISO 12100, and a technical-economic evaluation. A relaxation-type RC pulse generator was selected as the electrical energy source, with its parameters verified by simulation in MATLAB Simulink. Recommended topics for further development are automatic tool changer, a more productive generator, and an intelligent control system.
