This master's thesis deals with the thermodynamic and aerodynamic design of an expansion turbine for large-scale Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) systems. Since the expansion efficiency is a key factor in the overall efficiency of the storage cycle, the thesis focuses on the detailed optimization of the turbine flow path. Based on a mathematical model integrating flow kinematics, modern loss models, and blade strength limits, a three-casing turbine concept was designed. This independent-shaft arrangement allows for the optimization of rotational speeds for individual pressure levels, thereby achieving maximum technical work while respecting material constraints at low temperatures. The final design was validated using available scientific literature, confirming that the achieved internal efficiency and operational stability fully correspond to the theoretical assumptions for machines in this power category.
