This master's thesis focuses on the analysis and design of an upgraded prototype of an automated Pick and Place machine for cutting and applying self-adhesive magnetic dots. The primary objective was to overcome the technological and operational limitations of a previous laboratory apparatus. The newly developed system utilizes a rigid gantry structure with linear ball bearings, integrating the cutting mechanism and the magnetic tape spool directly onto the mobile X-axis carriage, which significantly minimizes axis travel distances and optimizes the production cycle time. The control system has been transformed into a modern hierarchical Klipper architecture, using a Raspberry Pi as the logical host with a customized touch-screen graphic user interface (GUI), and an Arduino Mega acting as the motion microcontroller paired with digital DM542T stepper drivers and stepper motors. To eliminate human error, a QR code reader was integrated to ensure automatic loading of programs controlling the desired positions of magnetic points. A major process innovation involves replacing the original pneumatic vacuum ejector with a permanent magnetic applicator, which verifiably eliminates compressed air consumption and provides electrical energy savings. The thesis also includes a comprehensive risk assessment in accordance with ISO 12100 and the implementation of hardware functional safety elements achieving Performance Level C per ISO 13849-1, elevating the prototype to industrial safety standards.
